Structured Day Care Programme

A safe, structured, and supportive path to recovery.

What we do

At Hamoaze House, our Structured Day Care Programme offers a calm, consistent, and trauma-informed environment for adults affected by substance use. Co-designed with service users and aligned with national best practice, the programme supports meaningful recovery through structure, connection, and therapeutic work.

What the Programme offers

Our day programme follows the Intensive Structured Day Treatment (ISDT) model. It includes:

  • Daily therapeutic group sessions
  • 1:1 keywork support that supplements your group attendance
  • Peer support and community integration
  • Smaller “Reset Groups” for those new to Hamoaze- a group where you can learn how to get the best out of our programme.
  • Holistic therapies including:
    • NADA protocol acupuncture
    • Mindfulness and yoga
    • Creative groups: music, art, and creative writing
  • Regular off-site days for outdoor pursuits and community connection
  • Access to a wide range of support services for both mental and physical health through our partnerships across the Plymouth Alliance
Hamoaze House, therapeutic community

A therapeutic community

Hamoaze House is more than a service—it’s a community. Recovery here happens through shared experience, mutual support, and collective responsibility.

Research shows that therapeutic communities lead to better recovery outcomes by reducing isolation, increasing accountability, and fostering genuine connection. Being part of a structured, supportive peer group helps rebuild trust, self-esteem, and purpose.

At Hamoaze, you’re not just receiving support—you’re helping shape the space, support others, and grow together. That’s the power of community.

Home Cooked Food

Sharing food, building community

A hot, home-cooked lunch is prepared every day at Hamoaze House, and everyone is encouraged to sit down and eat together around the table.

Sharing a meal provides more than good food. It creates time to pause, connect with others and feel part of the community. For some people, it also helps rebuild healthy routines and makes regular, nutritious meals easier to maintain.

The dining table is an important part of life at Hamoaze House—a place for conversation, friendship, laughter and mutual support.

A typical day at Hamoaze

Each day offers structure, variety, and choice. You might take part in:

Morning

  • Morning check-ins and therapeutic groups
  • Groups are strictly 10.30 am start until 12.
  • We also do our ‘housework’ tasks……………

Hamoaze House is cared for by the whole community rather than by a separate cleaning team. Community members and staff at every level take part in the everyday jobs that keep the building clean, welcoming and well cared for.

Sharing these tasks builds responsibility, pride and respect for the space we use together. It reflects our belief that everyone has an equal part to play in looking after our community.

Midday

  • Community lunch and peer connection
  • Music, art, creative writing, or mindfulness
  • Acupuncture and yoga

Afternoon

  • Housing, benefits or employment support
  • Outdoor activities or trips off-site
  • One to One sessions
  • SMART Recovery Group
  • 4pm Check Out Group- so you can round off your day before home.

Getting involved as you grow

Your voice matters

At Hamoaze, your voice matters. Our programme is shaped not just for you, but with you. Through regular service user forums, co-design days, and peer-led initiatives, you help decide what activities we run, how groups work, and how we evolve.

Recovery isn’t something we deliver—it’s something we build together. Many people who come through our programme feel inspired to give back—and we fully support that. Whether it’s helping at events, joining co-design groups, or exploring formal volunteering later on, there are many ways to stay connected.

Volunteering……………when ready

Peer volunteering at Hamoaze is available once someone is ready—typically after at least 6–12 months of stable recovery. We take a trauma-informed approach that prioritises emotional readiness and healthy boundaries.

We also work closely with volunteering agenicies to help you explore safe and meaningful volunteer opportunities beyond Hamoaze as part of your growth.

Employment support available

As part of your recovery, you can access Individual Placement Support (IPS)—a personalised job coaching approach that helps you find and keep meaningful paid work.

Who can join & refer

We welcome anyone with a current or past history of problematic drug or alcohol use who wants to use groupwork and community to achieve a sustainable recovery.

Self-referrals are encouraged, and you don’t need to be sent by a professional.
We also accept referrals from GPs, housing providers, social workers, mental health teams, and other services.

Wherever you are, start here…………….

One of our favourite descriptions of change is Portia Nelson’s Autobiography in Five Short Chapters. It describes repeatedly falling into the same hole, gradually recognising what is happening, learning to make a different choice and eventually taking another road.

Change rarely happens all at once. You might still be falling into the same hole, beginning to recognise it, trying to climb out, or already searching for a different path.

It does not matter where you are in the story. Give us a call and we will listen, talk through your situation and help you consider the next step.

No wrong door

Whether you come to us through housing, mental health, or recovery—we’ll support you and connect you to what you need.

How to get started

Call or Email, and we will arrange an appointment to welcome you with a calm, scheduled introduction so we can take the time to understand your needs.
