Support for families

Strengthening families through compassion, connection, and community.

What we do

At Hamoaze House, we understand that families are often deeply affected by addiction, trauma, and social exclusion—but are too often left unsupported. We work alongside parents, carers, and young people to build trust, strengthen relationships, and help families recover together.

Whether you’re supporting a loved one with substance use, trying to reconnect with your child, or a young person navigating difficult experiences, you are not alone. We’re here to listen, support, and walk with you.

SMART Family and Friends Meetings

Supporting families through connection and understanding

SMART Family Meetings offer a welcoming and confidential space for people affected by someone else’s alcohol or drug use.

Meetings take place every Friday from 1.00pm to 3.00pm at Hamoaze House and are open to family members, friends and anyone supporting someone through recovery.

The meetings help people to:

Understand addictive behaviour and recovery
Develop healthier communication and boundaries
Manage difficult emotions and challenging situations
Learn practical tools for looking after their own wellbeing
Connect with others who have similar experiences

“You realise that you are not alone. Other people understand what you are going through.”— Group participant

The meetings are supportive, practical and non-judgemental. Plans are also being developed to expand SMART Family Meetings to other locations across Plymouth.

Bud Club / Give A Child A Chance

A welcoming place for the whole family………………..

BUD Club is an inclusive and relaxed space for families with children who have emotional, behavioural or neurodevelopmental needs.

The club is run by Nicky and her volunteers through the Give a Child a Chance charity, with sessions hosted at Hamoaze House.

Families can enjoy a range of activities together, including:

Arts and crafts
Sport and physical activities
Yoga and relaxation
Cooking and shared activities
Opportunities to meet other families

“BUD Club is one of the few places where our whole family can relax, feel understood and be ourselves.”— Parent participant

Children and adults are encouraged to try new things without pressure or fear of getting them wrong. Families often build confidence, reduce anxiety and form friendships and support networks that continue beyond the club.

Hamoaze House is very pleased to provide a welcoming home for BUD Club.

Parental Conversations Pilot

Building bridges between home and school

The Parental Conversations Pilot is an early-intervention service currently operating in Devonport , St Budeaux and Stonehouse. It offers patient, compassionate, parent-led support for families who may feel unheard or misunderstood—particularly those affected by adversity, substance use, or trauma.
Our small, dedicated team:

  • Builds relationships with parents and carers at their own pace
  • Supports improved communication with schools and services
  • Advocates for children’s wellbeing in education settings
  • Uses tools like Ripple Effects Mapping to reflect impact over time

“I feel more confident speaking with the school. It’s made a difference to how my child is treated—and how I’m treated too.”— Parent participant

The pilot is strengths-based, trauma-informed, and non-stigmatising. It is supported by a multi-agency Steering Group and closely aligned with local schools and family hubs.

Supporting young people affected by complex lives

We offer informal youth support through partnerships with local schools, early help services, and youth networks. Our work includes:

  • Providing a safe, supportive presence for young people impacted by parental substance use
  • Co-creating activities during school holidays and community days
  • Supporting emotional resilience and relationship-building through trusted adults
  • Helping young people feel connected, capable, and valued
  • Local evening Youth Club Provision

Where appropriate, we also work alongside family members to support whole-family wellbeing.
